I'm preparing a cover letter for a job application I've submitted (internal at my company). The job is for a management position in a department I worked in 3 years ago. The manager who is in charge of this job is someone who does not know me. How do I start my cover letter? The bulk of the cover letter on why I'm a good candidate is the easy part. I need to know the proper way to address it and the proper way to open it. Please help! Thanks!

For the opening, go overly professional (Mr., Mrs. Lastname) just in case. Then I would own the fact that you don't know them. It's akin to a "cold call" in some ways so maybe start with "I realize we have have not had the opportunity to work together before, however..." and then lay out your attributes that would make you good for that position. Don't forget, when documenting accomplishments, focus more on "impact", i.e. how what you did helped the organization, customers, etc. than minutia about what you did. Good luck!

Where is automatch? He's the english teacher...oh probobly teaching class.

Try searching the OWL (Online Writing Lab at perdue), that's where I go when I'm stuck on format.

Thanks. The business impact was a great help. Is 2 paragraphs good? An opening a list of reasons to consider me and a signature?

Dear Mr./Ms. [Manager in charge of job],

As you may already know, I was with the [name] department from [year] to [year] before [transferring/being promoted] to [current department]. This letter is in support of my application ([enclosed/attached]) for the [name of position] that is now open.

Although my tenure in [name of department] did not overlap with yours, blah blah blah I'm awesome hire me.

No problem. Keep it fairly short, probably somewhere between 1/2 and 1 page. Some may disagree, but feel free to name drop. If you have worked with someone in their department who you think would speak positively of you, maybe mention that. Keep it fairly low key like "while working with X from your department, I was able to do (accomplishment) that provided (impact). Something like that. Either that or queue up some references separately. Point being he/she will want some independent validation that you are good and the closer that person is to them the better.

The owl is a beautiful thing that english majors have probably set up a cult for.
